Midwifery Service
Blue Skies Center for Women offers the services of certified nurse-midwives, in addition to offering conventional obstetric and gynecology care with physicians and nurse-practitioners. Carol Hurst, CNM, MSN, joined the practice in August, 2005 and Alice Cole, CNM, MSN, joined in March, 2006. They offer obstetrics and gynecology care to well-women and do deliveries at Memorial Hospital.
Midwifery care has become more common in the United States over the last several decades. Midwives now attend about 10 % of deliveries. In many developed parts of the world, for example, Great Britain, Sweden, and Holland, midwives are the usual caregivers during pregnancy and childbirth. Certified nurse-midwives are registered nurses with bachelor?s degrees who have two years of additional graduate work in the areas of women?s health, obstetrics and gynecology. In the State of Colorado, they are licensed and permitted to provide well-woman gynecology services, in addition to prenatal, delivery and after delivery care.
The nurse-midwives employed by Blue Skies Center for Women work in collaboration with licensed physicians who specialize in obstetrics and gynecology. The collaborative relationship allows the nurse-midwife to consult with the physician in problem cases. The consultation process may end in the nurse-midwife continuing to provide services in collaboration with the physician, or in cases of very high-risk problems, the nurse-midwife may completely transfer care of the patient to the physician. In cases of transfer, the nurse-midwife often remains involved some aspects of the patient?s care.
